Pakistan’s currency was launched on 1st April 1948.
This currency had six coins, which included:
One rupee coin, half rupee (athanni), quarter rupee (chawanni), two-anna coin (do aani), one-anna coin (ek aani), and one-paisa coin.
At that time, one rupee equaled 16 annas or 64 paisas.
These coins were in circulation until 1st January 1961. In 1961, President Ayub Khan abolished the “anna” system in the country.
After that, one rupee was divided into 100 paisas.
The half rupee (athanni), quarter rupee (chawanni), and two-anna coin (do aani) were discontinued.
Instead, coins of 50 paisas, 25 paisas, 10 paisas, 5 paisas, and 1 paisa were introduced.
These coins remained in circulation until the era of Genera
l Zia-ul-Haq.
